Resona

Stefan Cartwright is the founder and director of Resona. He also works as an improvising musician, musical instrument developer and yoga practitioner.

His practice has led him to work with staff and patients within the NHS, children with special education needs, the homeless, and people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. He has run workshops for educators, artists and music therapists and has travelled to Holland, Croatia and India to share his work.

His background includes creating original music for the Mo' Wax record label and remixing the work of artists including Radiohead. In the late 1990s, as part of the artist group Rechord he co-developed instruments which enabled people to create their own audio-visual compositions in real-time. The installation 'Cubop' drew interest from Demos (the thinktank), The BBC and Nesta (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) and led to him presenting at several universities and at The ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art).

In 2007 he co-composed and sung on the debut album by Tambura, a seven piece improvising ensemble featuring voice, spanish guitar, double bass, saxophone, violin, harp and percussion. In 2008 his solo work Improvisations with Singing Bowls, Bells and Gongs was released on the Quiet Illumination label. He continues to perform improvised music, singing and playing shruti box with the acoustic trio Bardo Muse.

His passion for the improvising art-form of Indian Raga led him to study vocal music with Pandit Barun Kumar Pal from Kolkata. He has also helped to bring some of the finest Indian artists to perform in the UK.

Stefan has taught yoga since 1995 and developed his practice with Dr Pete Yates of the Heart Yoga School and New York based yoga elder and sound artist Don Conreaux. He is a member of the Independent Yoga Network (IYN).
